In September 1991, Huawei rented the third floor of the Haoye Village Industrial Building in Bao'an County, Shenzhen, to set up a facility for developing program-controlled switches. More than 50 young employees followed Ren Zhengfei to this dilapidated factory building, embarking on their challenging and uncertain entrepreneurial journey. They divided the entire floor into four main work sections—single-board assembly, power supply, comprehensive testing, and preparation—along with additional spaces for storage and a kitchen. Amidst the scorching heat of the machinery, employees worked tirelessly around the clock, sweating profusely as they designed and crafted circuit boards, assembled call terminals, soldered components, wrote software, and meticulously tested, tweaked, and retested their prototypes. Throughout this intense period, Ren Zhengfei made nearly daily visits to the site to oversee production and track development progress. He held regular meetings to discuss ongoing challenges, assigning tasks and coordinating efforts to tackle the myriad issues that arose. Even during meal times, Ren Zhengfei and company leaders would join everyone at nearby food stalls for casual, communal meals.
